Fall is a busy time in the Finger Lakes; the brightly colored leaves are out, the air is getting crisp and cool, and everyone is out finding their perfect pumpkins, making it a prime time for events and activities around here. The end of October also marks, of course, Halloween, which brings along its own set of events and themed activities throughout the region.
While this list is by no means every single event around here for October, it’s a list of some highlights I think are worth being a part of.
Tagsylvania – Tag’s bar and popular concert spot in Big Flats is turned into a creepy theme park in the fall with 3 separate attractions. This is a very popular haunted-house type of event, so be sure to check it out! Open now through Halloween. tagsylvania.com
Fall Foliage Glider Rides – Harris Hill Soaring is a popular activity all summer long, but it’s especially beautiful when all the pretty leaves have come out to play! Every weekend in October, weather permitting. harrishillsoaring.org
October 5 – Rupert’s Table Italian Feast – Chef Rupert at the Inns of Aurora, E.B. Morgan House is cooking up a three-course Italian feast fit for royalty. The package is $400 per couple and includes dinner, overnight accommodations, and a homemade breakfast in the morning. innsofaurora.com
October 10 – Leaf Peeping Paddle on the River – Southern Tier Kayak Tours in Elmira is hosting a guided paddle on the Chemung River, winding through cliffs and giving you an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage from the water. stktours.com
October 10, 17, 18, & 31 – Pumpkin Chunkin’ at Varick Winery – Release your tensions by hurling pumpkins at a target. Guess the weight of the homegrown pumpkin and win a prize. $4 wine tasting fee. varickwinery.com
October 10 & 11 – Treleaven Harvest Fest – This two-day celebration includes grape stomping, a pumpkin painting contest, food, lawn-games, live entertainment, and wine and craft beer tastings. October 23 & 24 – 9th Annual Ghost Walk – Take a lantern-lit tour through Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira with the Chemung Valley History Museum as you explore firsthand accounts of history as told by the tenants of the cemetery. chemungvalleymuseum.org
- Haunted Happenings – This family-friendly fall celebration at Tanglewood Nature Center in Elmira includes pumpkins, apples, hayrides, and more. tanglewoodnaturecenter.com
- Finger Lakes Beer Festival – This festival hosted by the Finger Lakes Beer Trail includes more than 35 breweries, cideries, and distilleries all under one roof at Watkins Glen International. It includes a sampling glass, event merchandise, cornhole tournament, regional food, and a bonfire. Two-day camping is available. theglen.com
October 24 & 31 – Murder Mystery Dinner – Held at the Rowland House in Aurora, guests can visit the Rowland house for a three-course dinner and participate in a murder mystery. Package includes a wine and cheese reception, dinner, and overnight accommodations. $475 per couple. innsofaurora.com
October 30 – Monster Bash 2015 – The Holiday Inn in Elmira is once again hosting the annual Monster Bash. You must be 21 or older to get in. It will include dancing, a DJ, and a costume contest with prizes. Tickets are $10. For more information, click here.
