If you’ve lived/been in the area for any length of time, chances are you’ve heard of Reisinger’s Apple Country. If you haven’t, today is your lucky day! It’s located in Watkins Glen, about 3 miles west of downtown up in the hills and farm country.
Reisinger’s is, of course, most well known for their beautifully curated apple orchards, open for picking yourself during harvest season. There are over 20 varieties of apples just at Reisinger’s alone! Did you even know there were that many apple varieties?! Depending on which month you visit and time of month, etc, some varieties won’t be available yet or will have finished their season, but there are well over a dozen varieties on any given day you visit. They have everything from Gala, to Jonamac, to Ginger Gold, to Empire and more. Honey Crisp apples are great for baking, and Macintosh and Jonamac are great for applesauce. If you are planning on using apples for a specific recipe and don’t know what to use, just ask the staff. They’ll be more than willing to recommend the best varieties.
Aside from apples, Reisinger’s has much more to offer. They have a multitude of pumpkins, all lined up outside and perfect for the choosing. Everything from little ones to big that are perfect to carve jack-o-lanterns. Another thing you can pick yourself is raspberries; we picked a little berry carton full and they’re so delicious.
When it comes time to pay for all of the things you’ve picked, it’s all weighed and you’re given a receipt with your amount due, and you take it inside to their little store. They have a lot in there! Seasonally they offer pears, peaches, blueberries, and plums. They also use their own fruit to make jams and apple butter, and tap their trees to make maple syrup. During harvest season, they sell apple cider and apple cider doughnuts, and they’re a must!
If you’re in a rush or can’t get around well, you aren’t forgotten just because you won’t be going out and picking apples off the trees! They do pick some themselves and sell apples in their store, so don’t worry, you’ll get your apples one way or another! 🙂
Harvest season at Reisinger’s Apple Country is from August to November 11. During that time, they’re open 7 days a week from 9am-6pm.
