Warning: you don’t have to be a wine aficionado whatsoever to enjoy Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. But if you are, you’re going to have a great time too.
In my opinion, Hazlitt is one of the best wineries in all of the Finger Lakes. They are all about having a good time and enjoying wine, whether you’ve never had a sip in your life or are a sommelier. Back in 1852, David Hazlitt bought 153 acres of vineyards and fruit trees in Hector, NY. In 1985, Jerry and Elaine Hazlitt founded the winery. Today Doug Hazlitt owns the business, and it’s booming.
Located on the east side of Seneca Lake, Hazlitt is in a prime spot with a beautiful view and quiet landscape. Walk up to the big double doors, and you’ll be greeted by a room filled with warm wooden features and a big, horseshoe shaped bar. Sit down at it, and one of Hazlitt’s friendly staff will give you a tasting list where you can pick up to 6 wines, and you can get started.
My absolute favorite wine is Red Cat, not just at Hazlitt, but out of any wine I’ve ever had. I’m not the only one who thinks so either, because it’s their flagship wine and their most popular. It’s a sweet wine with a really fruity flavor, and is a good crowd pleaser; I can’t get enough of it. If you visit, ask someone the story behind it, it’s a good one.
Since I’m just 21, I haven’t been to a whole lot of wineries yet. But I have been to several and I honestly can say that Hazlitt is probably my favorite. The people there are extremely friendly and don’t make you feel rushed at all, which I love when I’m wine tasting. I would recommend going on a weekday, because it’s much less crowded than weekends are. Tasting is $5, but if you buy a bottle of wine in their shop after tasting, you get $5 off; basically meaning your tasting was free.
While you’re at the vineyards, make sure you check out their outdoor, tropics inspired party pavilion, The Oasis. This wine and beer bar also serves hot dogs, wine slushies, oven pizzas, and other snacks. It’s perfect for hosting gatherings and parties, and there’s live music there every Friday night during the summer. It’s a beautiful location overlooking the lake, and I personally can’t wait to visit on a Friday night this summer.
